ABSTRACT
Polyvinyl chloride is a polymer, or large chain-like molecule, made up of repeating units of vinyl chloride (a monomer = VCM). We find PVC in car interiors and trim, wall coverings, floor tiles, window frames, siding, water pipes, food wraps, medical equipment (tubing, transfusion bags, blood storage bags, respiration tubes), beverage cups and toys (Andika, US Dept of Health). Research in the United States by Boffeta (2003) and Bosetti (2003) proved that vinyl chloride is a compound that can cause damage to the liver, kidneys and cause cancer also.
Migrate vinyl chloride monomer into food that is triggered by several things heat, acids, alcohol and fats. The higher the temperature of food or drink that is inserted into the plastic so the sooner this happens the displacement (M.Fayad).To view the amount of vinyl chloride which may be migrated from the packaging plastic cup into the beverage has been conducted using water with variation of pH with stored at 60°C for 7 and 14 days. Identification and determination of vinyl chloride using Gas Chromato-graphy method, the result of one pack pH 2 stored 14 days at a temperature of 60oC contain vinyl chloride with levels of 200 ppb. The maximum permissible limit of VCM in drinking water set by the Indonesian Health Minister Number 907/MENKES/SK/VII/2002 is 5 ppb.
