ABSTRACT
According to Indonesian Demographic Survey Year 2010, infant mortality rate in Indonesia was 35 per 1000 still birth, and then increases to 26,9 per 1000 still birth in 2007. The high infant mortality rate was caused by infections, diarrhea, pneumonia, congeniality disorder, heart disorder, meningitis, and nutrient deficiency. One of the efforts promoted to decrease the infant mortality rate was to lower the nutrient deficiency by exclusive breastfeeding.
The objective of this research was to observe the relationship between the length of exclusive breastfeeding period and infant weight/age, height/age, and weight/height based on WHO-NCHS standard. This research was done with historical cohort design to observe the effects shown by babies with 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 months exclusive breastfeeding.
The samples were 60 babies having >6-12 months age in Bogor City taken from 5 community health center (Puskesmas). The population of babies in the area within the period of study was 351 babies. The survey was done by interviewing mothers and measuring babies’ anthropometry data.
The data were analyzed with variance analysis to determine the difference between the means of two categories, Mann-Whitney test to determine means of two proportions, and Kruskall-Wallis test to determine the means of several proportions.
The characteristics showing significant effect was mother parity with p value < 0,005, while sex of babies, mother’s income, and mother’s education status did not show significant effects. The length of exclusive breastfeeding period showed a significant effect to the weight/age ratio with p<0,01, but did not show a significant effect to the height/age ratio with p>0,005. The growth represented with height/age did not have a correlation with the exclusive breastfeeding period. Referring to WHO-NCHS standard, longer exclusive breastfeeding period causes a higher growth represented with percent of weight/age median and a higher growth represented with percent of weight/height median, while there was no relationship between the length of exclusive breastfeeding period and the growth represented with percent of height/age median.
It is suggested that mothers give exclusive breastfeeding in early age of babies as those promoted by the government. A more intensive socialization is required within Bogor City through the Puskesmases and Posyandus.
