ABSTRACT
Dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) is a disease caused by dengue virus (DEN). The virus consists of 4 serotype, they are the DEN-1, DEN-2, DEN-3, and DEN-4. DEN virus is transmitted through Aedes aegypti or Aedes albopictus mosquito bites. These types of mosquitoes are almost found in every places in Indonesia, except some places that are at more than 1000 meters height.
The research was conducted between June to November 2007. The study had been done on the dengue virus serotype which was infected DHF volunteers (patients) by using RT-PCR method. The aim of the study is to identify the description of serotype dengue virus that has caused the infection. There were 85 volunteers with DHF that became the samples. The age of the samples were 21 to 50 years old who were with body temperature (fever) higher than 37.8o C within less than five days. The examination used Rumpel Leed Test to count the thrombocyte amount and RT-PCR. It is found that there were positive results on 15 volunteers (17.6%) and negative results on 70 volunteers (82.4%). From those 15 positive volunteers, 2 volunteers are infected by DEN-1 (13.3%), 4 volunteers are infected by DEN-2 (26.7%), 4 volunteers are infected DEN-3 (26,7%), and 5 volunteers are infected by DEN-4 (33.3%).
Rumple Leeds test showed there were positive results on 15 volunteers, however only 4 volunteers had positive results with RT-PCR method. The 11 RT-PCR positives had negative Rumple Leed results. The RT-PCR is more specific than Rumple Leed Test. During the examination the amount of thrombocyte was unpredictable because of its variation. Dengue serotype DEN-4T has caused the infection on 33.3% of all volunteers in Dr. Hasan Sadikin Hospital.
